Local Effort Raises Over $20k to Feed Disadvantaged Latinx Families
Washington, DC, July 6, 2020: Metro DC Hispanic Contractors Association, Dynamic Concepts, Shinberg.Levinas, The CalPro Group, Results One LLC and Latinas USA have joined forces and proudly announce that they have organized, with the assistance of Giant Foods Inc., a food security program called “Closing the Gap.” To date, more than 40 families in the District of Columbia have benefitted from the program.
Each month, “Closing the Gap” provides economically disadvantaged [Latinx] families with a $100 gift card to Giant to enable them to purchase nutritional groceries. The $100 gift card is accompanied by a list of suggested nutritional groceries and safety masks for each family member.
“Closing the Gap” is easing the burden on disadvantaged [Latinx] families stressed by loss of income and lack of food. The group plans to continue with the distribution of Giant gift certificates through December 31, 2020, or as long as necessary until normalcy returns. Another phase of the project being planned is to find sustainable employment for the family members.
Giant Food has been extraordinarily generous with the program and has donated fifty $50 gift certificates ($2,500 value) to Closing the Gap. Other major donors include Fort Myer Construction, JCP Home Services, ACSI, PPE response, Keystone Plus Construction, Winmar Construction, Andean Consulting, and Green Construction Group. “We would like to thank these corporate donors and our many other individual donors for their contributions, said Kim Alonso, one of the program’s founders. “It is in hard times, such as these, when our community comes together, that we can make a real difference in people’s lives.”

We'd like to add our congratulations to Carolyn Ellison who last month was honored by the Maryland/Washington Minority Companies Association as "2020 Most Inclusive Prime Construction Leader'.
We recognized this from the beginning of her tenure when we awarded Turner Construction Company of the Year at a fundraiser when she was just beginnig her tenure in DC.
Carolyn has been instrumental in our growth and success. Her support for the Turner School of Construction Management 'en Español' has made it a national model and, with a great deal of sacrifice and controversy, made her into one of the most respected leaders at Turner Construction.
Without Carolyn MDCHCA would not be where it is today. We owe her our gratitude and admiration. She will always be considered family by us. Our entire organization salutes her.
